Two awards to IUE designers from Denizli
The success of the young people of Izmir Economy marked the 2nd Home and Bathroom Textile Design Competition organized by Denizli Exporters' Association (DENIB) with the theme of ‘timeless travel’ this year. While Habibe Çakır, a graduate of Izmir University of Economics (IUE) Department of Textile and Fashion Design, came first in the bathroom textile category with her collection named ‘Benelava’, Eda Can, who continues her education in the same department, ranked third in the home textile category with her design called ‘Peganum Harmala’.
The 2nd Home and Bathroom Textile Design Competition organized by DENIB to bring innovative, high value-added and innovative products to the sector, was held under the coordination of the Turkish Exporters Assembly (TIM) and with the support of the Ministry of Commerce. While many ambitious projects from all over Turkey participated in the competition, the results were determined after a detailed examination by the jury.
Habibe Çakır, a graduate of IUE Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Department of Textile and Fashion Design (2020) and a Design Studies Graduate Program student, won the 40 thousand lira award in the bathroom textile category. Eda Can, a third year student at IUE Department of Textile and Fashion Design, was awarded the third place in the home textile category and was rewarded with 10 thousand liras.
INSPIRED BY THE ANCIENT CITY OF LAODICEA
Stating that while she was preparing her designs, she was inspired by the ancient city of Laodicea, which is located 6 kilometers north of Denizli and where excavations are still continuing, Habibe Çakır said, “I was inspired by the architecture, mosaics, colors and cultural structure of the city of Laodicea when I prepared my collection named Benelava. The patterns I used in my collection were created by abstracting the mosaics of the city. I aimed to create innovative designs by feeding off of the values of this geography and I was successful. Also, I used natural materials in my designs and wanted to make an emphasis on sustainability. This award also provided me with strength and motivation for my future work.”
MY FIRST AWARD, I'M VERY HAPPY
IUE student Eda Can, who was awarded the third place in the competition, said that her designs were inspired by the seed structure of the Syrian rue and related motifs were embroidered on textile products such as duvet covers, coverlet and pillowcases. Eda Can said, “I have designed products that can be used easily in daily life, that do not contain synthetic materials and appeal to different tastes. I know that the participation in the competition was high. It made me very proud to be deemed worthy of an award among so many beautiful designs. This competition was the first competition I participated in and I was very happy to be awarded.”
